Several years ago, a group of Chinese engineers visited the showcase Norman Levy Park and Preserve to learn about recycling a landfill into a park. Their hosts were amazed that all they had for lunch was a “dollar meal” hamburger each.

At a nearby dollar store, a half-dozen Pakistani employees were spotted sharing a can of Coke using paper cups, obviously a routine break for them.

Maybe part of the problem Americans have with fast foods and other meals is the portions we take.

Generations ago, the family farmer had to fill up his stomach just as if he were filling up a tractor with gas. He had so much phyisical work to do. Today, we still eat those traditional meals. Ever stop at a midwestern truck stop and get a steak too big for the plate and a mountain of mashed potatoes on the side? Plus a bucket of ice cream for dessert – way too much!

But that may be the way our diet looks to others.

Summertime is a good time to start a healthier lifestyle. Fresh produce is less expensive. We can even start backyard or balcony gardens. Getting outside and walking is easier.

But summertime is also a harder time for children who receive reduced-price meals at school during the year. Don’t make them rely on chips and other cheap junk food to fill their bellies. Buy a little extra of healthy foods for the food pantry, or send a donation. And help make summertime a little easier for everyone.
