With the flu season upon us, and concerns about the swine flu this year, comes the reminder that the best defense is a good offense.

A reader forwarded us an e-mail from cardiologist Dr. Stephen Sinatra, who recommends frequent hand washing, getting enough rest, keeping a positive attitude, avoiding stress and eating a nutritious diet. He says too much sugar weakens the immune system.

He also lists an assortment of vitamins to boost your immune system.

Among them are licorice root to support the adrenal glands and fight inflammation in the lungs (but to be used only for a short time by those with high blood pressure); n-acetyl-cysteine, which supports the liver and helps remove toxins; and Vitamin C to help fight infection.

Once symptoms of the flu such as sore throat, body aches, headaches, chills, fatigue and congestion appear, he adds another three supplements: selenium, elderberry and quercetin.

Of course, seeking medical help is crucial, especially for shortness of breath.

Locally, a number of pharmacies are offering flu shots for the regular flu, and swine flu vaccine is expected to be available soon for those for whom it is recommended.
