Democrats take power, local Republicans keep seats

Democratic Senator Barack Obama was elected as the 44th President of the United States of America on November 4.

But while Democrats took a majority of seats in Washington and Albany (the first time the Democrats in Albany will be in the majority in both chambers since the 1930s), local Republican incumbents remain in power.

Congressman Peter King, (Third Congressional District) from Seaford, will return to the House of Representatives. State Senator Charles Fuschillo (8th Senatorial District) of Merrick will return to Albany as will Assemblyman David McDonough (19th Assembly District) of North Merrick. Assemblyman Thomas McKevitt (17th Assembly District) of East Meadow will also return to Albany.

In Nassau County 316,523 people voted to elect the Obama/Biden ticket to the White House. The McCain/Palin ticket received 272,765 votes. In Bellmore 3,824 people, and 5,194 people in North Bellmore, voted for the Obama/Biden ticket. Meanwhile, the McCain/Palin ticket received 4,198 votes in Bellmore and 5,014 votes in North Bellmore.

Congressman King received 4,640 votes in Bellmore and 2,669 in North Bellmore. His opponent, Democrat Graham Long, received 2,311 votes in Bellmore and 1,605 in North Bellmore. Countywide, Congressman King received 127,394 votes to Mr. Long’s 70,818 votes.

Senator Fuschillo received 5,175 votes in Bellmore and 5,216 in North Bellmore. His opponent, Democrat Carol Gordon, received 1,824 votes in Bellmore and 2,626 in North Bellmore. Countywide, Senator Fuschillo received 64,045 votes and Ms. Gordon 36,409.

Assemblyman McDonough received 4,144 votes in Bellmore and 1,049 in North Bellmore. His opponent, Democrat Howard Kudler, received 2,252 votes in Bellmore and 494 in North Bellmore. Districtwide, Mr. McDonough received 31,460 votes and Mr. Kudler 19,142.

Assemblyman McKevitt received 128 votes in Bellmore and 3,717 in North Bellmore. His opponent, Democrat John Pinto, received 122 in Bellmore and 3,112 votes in North Bellmore. Districtwide, Assemblyman McKevitt received 30,282 votes and Mr. Pinto 21,898.
