Spirit of patriotism alive in Freeport

VETERANS HONORED IN FREEPORT: Local dignitaries and Freeport residents gathered at the Freeport Memorial Library on Tuesday, November 11 to honor our war veterans. After the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of the National Anthem by the Freeport High School Select Chorale, Mayor William F. Glacken made some opening remarks comparing our current politics to the story of the musical “South Pacific.” Guest speaker Pat Cassetta told those in attendance that today was a day to honor all the veterans of all the wars. Mr. Cassetta came to the United States in 1939 at 12 years of age from Italy. Grateful for the blessings of living in this country, he lied about his age and joined the Marines at age 16. He served from 1944 to 1947 in the Pacific theatre and fought in the Battles of Okinawa and Saipan.
