Democratic Senator Barack Obama was elected as the 44th President of the United States of America on November 4. His opponent was Republican candidate Senator John McCain.
But while Democrats took a majority of legislative seats in Washington and in Albany (the first time the Democrats in Albany will be in the majority in both chambers since the 1930s), local Republican incumbents held onto their power. Congressman Peter King (Third Congressional District) from Seaford, will return to the U.S. House of Representatives.
State Senator Charles Fuschillo (Eighth Senatorial District) of Merrick will return to Albany as will state Senator Dean Skelos (Ninth Senatorial District) of Rockville Centre. Assemblyman David McDonough of Merrick (19th Assembly District) and Assemblyman Robert Barra (14th Assembly District) will also return to Albany.
Democratic incumbents were also re-elected. They include Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy (Fourth Congressional District) of Garden City and Assemblywoman Earlene Hooper (18th Assembly District) of Roosevelt.
In Nassau County 316,523 people voted to elect the Obama/Biden ticket to the White House. The McCain/Palin ticket received 272,765 votes.
In Freeport 12,587 people voted for Obama/Biden and in Baldwin 10,368 people voted for the Obama/Biden ticket. Meanwhile, the McCain/Palin ticket received 3,570 votes in Freeport and 5,283 votes in Baldwin.
Congressman King received 1,860 votes in Freeport and 1,015 in Baldwin. Democrat Graham Long received 1,644 votes in Freeport and 2,150 votes in Baldwin. Countywide, Congressman King won 127,394 votes to Mr. Long’s 70,818 votes.
Congresswoman McCarthy received 8,624 votes in Freeport and 8,113 votes in Baldwin. Republican Jack Martins received 1,571 votes in Freeport and 3,205 votes in Baldwin. Districtwide, Congresswoman McCarthy won 153,320 votes to Mr. Martins’ 87,239.
Senator Fuschillo received 4,762 votes in Freeport and 1,505 in Baldwin. Democrat Carol Gordon received 8,099 votes in Freeport and 2,830 in Baldwin. Countywide, Senator Fuschillo received 64,045 votes and Ms. Gordon 36,409.
Senator Dean Skelos won 5,072 votes in Baldwin while Democrat Roy Simon received 3,753. Districtwide, Senator Skelos received 77,221 votes and Mr. Simon received 42,127.
Assemblyman David McDonough received 2,188 votes in Freeport and 580 votes in Baldwin. Democrat Howard Kudler received 3,042 votes in Freeport and 815 votes in Baldwin. Districtwide, Mr. McDonough won 31,460 votes and Mr. Kudler 19,142.
Assemblyman Barra received 4,227 votes in Baldwin. Democrat Joseph Ferrara received 4,696 votes in Baldwin. Districtwide Mr. Barra won 29,276 votes and Mr. Ferrara 21,799.
Assemblywoman Hooper received 5,796 votes in Freeport and 1,949 in Baldwin. Republican Darren Bryant received 1,241 votes in Freeport and 332 votes in Baldwin. Working Families candidate Henry Conyers received 177 votes in Freeport and 52 in Baldwin.
Districtwide, Assemblywoman Hooper won 30,092 votes. Mr. Bryant received 4,243 votes and Mr. Conyers 913.
