Pancakes and brotherhood

The traditional start of Thanksgiving week in our community – the Kiwanis Club of Merrick’s annual Pancake Breakfast – will be held on Sunday, November 23, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at Calhoun High School.

Stacks of pancakes, sausages, juice, and coffee are on the all-you-can-eat menu, along with a “stack” of raffle prizes, including a bike, a TV, Islanders’ tickets (with parking!), a gift basket from Iavarone Brothers and other items and gift certificates donated by local businesses.

The club will be collecting donations of non-perishable food items for its Food for Those in Need Drive. There also will be free blood pressure screening, and the opportunity to get a jump on holiday shopping at the children’s book sale.

The pancake breakfast is a great way to socialize with friends and neighbors, give Mom a rest before she has to prepare the big Thanksgiving Day feast, and support “The Club with a Heart” as it continues to work on behalf of the community by raising money to help needy families, students and senior citizens, and by providing funds for medical research and care for sick children.

It is also an opportunity to see our local kids involved in community service, as members of the Calhoun High School Key Club and Merrick Avenue Middle School Builders Club will be taking orders and serving the food and beverages.

Advance purchase tickets are $5 for adults, and are available at the Printing Emporium, 55 Merrick Avenue. Admission at the door is $6 per person, $3 for senior citizens, students and children.

Kiwanis is a service organization for individuals seeking personal involvement in the leadership and improvement of their communities. The Kiwanis Club of Merrick, which will celebrate its 60th anniversary this spring, meets Tuesdays at 6:45 p.m. at La Piazza, 2191 Merrick Road.

For further information about joining, making donations, or participating in the club’s projects, check out the website: www.merrickkiwanis.com or contact Membership Chairperson Douglas Mills at 223-2220.

Brotherhood Concert at 2 p.m.
What a grand invention is music…a series of sounds placed one next to another…the human voice blended with that of a second voice or perhaps solo or with a hundred others. All of this is on display to make us feel better about our place in the world.

On November 23, the Brotherhood Council of Merrick will present its free annual Thanksgiving Concert at Calhoun High School. Make certain to mark your calendar now so that you can witness the delightful sounds of music, all beginning at 2 p.m.

Held in conjunction with the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, this Thanksgiving celebration reflects the unusual goodwill and diversity enjoyed by these communities.

As of this writing, the following musical aggregations have reported their willingness to take part: the Mepham High School Vocal Jazz Choir, Sacred Heart Church Choir, the Kennedy High School Concert Choir, the Merrick Chorale, St. John’s Lutheran Church Choir and the Calhoun High School Concert Choir.

Bring your entire family and also reach out to your neighbors who may not drive and who may not ordinarily attend such events. Make plans to take part in this wonderful free annual event that has been part of this community for more than thirty years.

If your group wants to participate, call music coordinators Rita and Richard Gilley at 623-6118.
