Meatball, a fuzzy multi-colored cat, as round as her namesake, was fast asleep on the receptionists desk at the Freeport Animal Shelter. That is, until she heard the coffee coach pull into the parking lot.
Now totally alert, she begs for morning hand-outs from the volunteers.
Meatball is just one of many cats and dogs who have called the shelter home for the last 67 years. But, Meatballs buffet may soon be over, when the shelter runs out of money at the end of November.
Last year the shelter became no-kill and now there is no way to make money. Isnt that the saddest thing?
Weekly, when we hold adoption days at Mutts and Butts, Parrots of the World and Petco, we ask for donations, but that is not enough to operate the shelter.
Last summer, one of the volunteers even took half of her lifes savings out of the bank to keep the shelter open; that money will run out at the end of this month.
Please help us with donations of money, heating oil, food, litter, cleaning and laundry supplies. Could you help us write grants or start a school penny collection?
We also need a washing machine and dryer all pets get clean blankets every day! Do you have a reliable van or wagon youd donate? We are a tax-deductible charity.
We need many more volunteers: receptionists, dog walkers, litter scoopers, and pet feeders.
Are you a carpenter who could repair the holes in the roof or build raised dog beds, so the pups wont be sleeping on the icy concrete floor.
Do you know a vet or vet tech who would volunteer some time?
The fact is, we need everything!
Most of all, we need loving people who will give our fuzzy buddies a home.
Write to us at Freeport Animal Shelter, 2 Rider Place. Freeport 11520. Were open Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
For information call 379-1179.
